The Lighthouse: Community Service and House Events

We are now in the Lighthouse and LOVE it!

We have weekly family nights, led events in our house
and have been doing community service in the area!

Danni led a family night were we decorated our living room by painting a door!
It was fun and so creative!

Caleb, led a family game night!

Another family activity, was led by Renca! The team hiked the Old Rag.

At the start . . .

on the way . . .

at the top!

Twice a week we have events at the Lighthouse, inviting others to fellowship and have fun with us!
Events like . . . movie night

or bible study led by Caleb

or "The Collection"

"The Collection" is hosted by Renca and Destiny and it is a night of sharing poems, skits, stories that you can created.  They can been funny, reflective or random.  This month we had a packed house for the event!  Many shared from acting out movies and the audience had to guess to a BackStreet Boys song to a rap about how Jesus changed their lives.

Jonathan and Bridget, two friends of our community, shared.  Jonathan shared a common Deaf joke with a twist at the end and Bridget shared a crazy story of how she got in 2 car accidents within an hour one day. Below is a picture of our team, afterwards just hanging out with new friends.

We also have an goal of serving 1,000 hours of community service this summer!
Joseph H. Cole Park

We went to a neighborhood park with gloves and garbage bags,
and just picked up the trash in the park!

As we were there, we met Kelly, who works for the park. She asked what was going on and we shared that we just moved in the neighborhood and we loved and cared about people in the neighborhood, so decided to pick up the trash at the park.

As we shared, we talked about God and learned that her and her husband pastor a Spanish church in DC, ChristoVive! We encouraged each other and Destiny prayed for her.  She responded "This is my best day ever!"

We left the park clean and all walked home hungry!

A week later we decided to do the same thing for walk around Gallaudet University, picking up the trash!  As we were doing it, a car with two Deaf guys stopped at a red light, asking each other if the people that were picking up trash where Deaf or hearing.  I waved to get their attention and shared that we were a mixed group, Deaf and hearing people, who loved Jesus and loved Gallaudet University, so we were picking up the trash around the university.  They nodded their heads in approval and signed back "Thank you."

Planting Potatoes with Bread for the City

Another day, our team got our hands dirty, with an non-profit organization, called Bread for the City.  They have a farm and orchard in MD and voluteers can work the farm on Wednesdays and Fridays.  All the food they harvest goes to feed the poor in Washington, DC.

Another service we found was right across the street!  A few people on our block decided to do plant a garden in an empty lot!  So we got to met neighbors and service the community! It was hard work, pulling out weeds! It has been fun getting involved with community service and meeting people!

Olive is an amazing blessing to us and it has been a joy for her to meet her family
over the last four months. And I know that her family has loved meeting Olive!
This post is a picture collage of Olive meeting her family.
She is so blessed to have such a great loving family!

Celebrating the Life of Great Grandma Vera
Olive and I were able to fly home to celebrate the life of my Grandma, on my mother's side,
Olive's Great Grandma Vera.  She was a perfect Great Grandma.  She would encourage me when I exercised when I was pregnant, always call to see how Olive was, and sing to her on the phone. Her favorite song she would sing to Olive was "You are My Sunshine".

(Late) Dr. Paul Andrew Kubala and Grandma
Outing with grandma when we were young and celebrating Christmas in HS (below)
Her mind was sharp until the time of her passing.
I was able to see her before she went to heaven to be with Jesus
and Olive got to meet the family in Chicago!
We love you, Grandma.
Thank you for the legacy of love, joy and celebrating life, you left here on earth.
